Capital
My self-managed super fund: what it holds, the rules it follows, and every decision that changed them.
A super fund is retirement money. Whatever I build for it has to outlast any tool I use, so I treat it as a plan that follows me for life, not an app.
Capital holds the fund and its rules. The question it answers most often is simple: is the fund where its own rules say it should be, and if not, what needs my attention?
What it holds
- Holdings and values
- Each holding, where it is kept, and what it was worth on a given day.
- The settings
- The fund's rules, written as settings in groups: targets and limits for each asset and how much is held in reserve.
- Every decision
- A change to a setting is a decision with its reason, kept as a record. The history of the rules is as important as the rules.
How a setting changes
- 01
I propose
A change starts as my proposal in the console, with the reason for it written down.
- 02
Capital checks it
Before it can go further, Capital checks the proposal against the other settings and flags anything that would conflict.
- 03
I decide
Only my decision changes a setting, and the decision is kept with its reason, so the history of the rules is always there.
The checks
- Progress as time, not money
- The landing page shows progress towards the goal as years of spending covered, which says more than a target amount.
- Checks it can run itself
- Capital compares the fund with its own rules. A breach shows in red, and a value drifting outside its range shows in yellow.
- Attention in one place
- Anything that needs me reaches the Capital page and the console's Today and Pending, not a phone alert.
- Stale figures do not count
- A balance I typed in by hand counts only while it is recent. After that the check says so instead of trusting it.
The Capital app lives in the console. Like every domain, it follows the constitution: nothing changes the fund's rules until I have decided it myself.
Capital treats retirement money the way it deserves: every rule written down, every change checked, and every decision kept with its reason.
